SUBURBICON: TROUBLE IN PARADISE

BASED on the research by Oscar Award winner, George Clooney, from a 1957 documentary film “Crisis in Levittown”, a true story of what happened when William and Daisy Meyers became the first African American family to move in to Levittown, Pennsylvania.

Clooney recalled a script the Academy Award winning,Coen Brothers, who had sent to him back in 1999 called “Suburbicon.”It was a comedy/thriller with similar themes to Fargo and Burn After Reading: hapless characters making really bad decisions. Together with the producers, they thought that it seems a good time for a film that feels angry; combining the existing Suburbicon script and setting it in Levittown during the week the Meyer’s moved in.

Suburbicon tells the story of America’s emerging middle class, in the decade following the Second World War, was moving to the suburbs: idyllic, affordable homes in planned communities. For many, the American Dream of owning a home was becoming a reality for the first time.  It is a picture-perfect 1950s suburb where the best and worst of humanity are reflected through the deeds of ordinary people.  But when a home break-in turns deadly, a family must turn to blackmail, revenge, and betrayal in order to survive.

However, there’s a great deal of irony and social commentary in the characters’ story. They’re a growing family in search of the American Dream and feel like they’ll be welcome and safe in their new home. Unfortunately, their new neighbors are really disrespectful and sometimes dangerous: breaking windows and jumping on their car. Meanwhile, there’s a real problem next door no one is addressing.

Shot entirely in Southern California that stars the Academy Award winners, Matt Damon, as a model father and a husband, and Julianne Moore, who portrays the wife and the twin sister.

Suburbicon is showing on several moviehouses beginning on the 22nd  of November nationwide. It is exclusively distributed by Solar Pictures.

Critics Praise Hollywood Stars Andrew Garfield, Claire Foy in Heart-Wrenching Film “Breathe”

FROM his breakout role as Eduardo Saverin in “The Social Network” to finding himself as Peter Parker in “The Amazing Spider-Man”, Andrew Garfield is back in one of his most dramatic roles to date in “Breathe” co-starring Golden Globe winning actress (“The Crown”) Claire Foy.

The film takes us back to the 1950’s at the height of the Polio outbreak and welcomes us into the life of Robin Cavendish, who after being given only three months to live after being paralyzed from the neck down by polio at age 28, becomes a pioneering advocate for the disabled.

What does one do when an illness takes away your life during its prime? Does one succumb to the sickness or do you continue fighting and hope that somewhere along the way you find a silver lining?  Together with his wife Diana, they travel the world with the hopes of transforming the lives of others like him.

Critics could not help but find themselves spreading praises to the beauty of the story and how two of Hollywood’s finest gave their unforgettable performances in this docudrama.

The New York Times finds “Breathe” as the perfect mix of horror, drama and awareness needed for a movie with this kind of theme, “It’s a rebel moment of chillingly authentic horror that seems to have slipped through every bad-feeling filter the filmmakers have installed.”

Andy Serkis who has become a household name with a household face, makes his directorial debut in this film and is seen to be one for the books, Common Sense Media had this to say to the highly talented actor for his boldness in directing “Breathe”.

“In his directorial debut, Serkis keeps the focus tightly on the characters -- and reaps the rewards, especially from Foy's superb performance as Diana.”

Serkis gives you a glimpse of how a British film can be beautifully executed making it highly possible for it to reach the most golden of award ceremonies.

Written by William Nicholson (“Les Misérables”, “Gladiator”) the film co-stars Tom Hollander (“Hanna”), Hugh Bonneville (“Downton Abbey”) and Game of Thrones star Dean-Charles Chapman.
“Breathe” hits theaters near you starting November 22 and is distributed by Pioneer Films.

MARIAN CELEBRATES LOCAL LUXURY AT KULTURA

KULTURA celebrates local luxury as it re-opens its store at the Second Level of SM Makati and formally introduces its new brand ambassador Marian Rivera on November 9, 2017.

As a celebrity, hands-on Mom, and entrepreneur, Marian represents the modern Filipina with a global outlook, whose eclectic tastes have made her appreciate all things Filipino.  Like many young women today, she is rediscovering her heritage and appreciating the artistry of handcrafted accessories and beautifully embroidered apparel.

With that, she is confident enough to mix pieces from international designers with touches of Filipiniana in her everyday style, resulting in a look that is not costumey, but effortlessly chic and contemporary.

“The idea to get Marian Rivera as a brand ambassador started with a post of her in our silk barong dress for the inauguration of VP Leni Robredo,” says Kultura. “This post was met with a remarkable response, which included numerous inquiries to this day, about the dress she was wearing and its availability in our stores.”

Marian’s elegant taste in style and fashion has shown her love for locally-made products particularly because these are ‘gawang Pinoy’ and benefit Filipino exporters, manufacturers, communities and the economy in general. Through their partnership, Kultura hopes to strengthen an overall appreciation for local artistry and craftsmanship and ultimately, pride in our heritage.”

Marian and Kultura are both advocates of helping local communities, part of the day's proceeds on November 9 will support the 6,000+ surgeries that Smile Train provides annually to Filipino children in need.

“Since 2001, Smile Train has performed close to 50,000 cleft surgeries in the Philippines,” says Kimmy Coseteng-Flaviano, Country Director for Smile Train Philippines. This would not have been possible without our local partners who are committed to helping children with clefts and our donors who continue to believe in our cause.”

Uniquely Filipino select items are available at Kultura in SM Makati, Megamall, Mall of Asia, SM Aura Premier, SM City Cebu, SM Seaside, SM Lanang Premier and the newly opened Kultura at The Podium and at most SM Stores.  Its boutiques are located at Taal Vista Hotel, Pico de Loro, Molo Mansion Iloilo.  Visit www.kulturafilipino.com to discover more about Kultura.
